On Rheem systems we most often see dirty flame sensors causing no-heat lockouts, and failed run capacitors that stop the outdoor fan on hot days. Below are the issues we see most on Rheem systems, what usually causes them, and what you can safely check before calling a pro.
Common causes are a dirty air filter or clogged condenser coil, low refrigerant from a leak, a failed run capacitor, a frozen evaporator coil, a tripped breaker, or a thermostat set wrong. Set the thermostat to COOL and a few degrees below room temperature, replace a dirty filter, and check the breaker. If it still blows warm, it’s usually refrigerant or an electrical part — turn it off and call us at 609-665-3022.
Common causes are dead thermostat batteries or wrong settings, a tripped breaker or blown fuse, the furnace door safety switch, or a full condensate pan tripping the float switch. Check the thermostat, reset the breaker once, make sure the furnace door is closed, and look for water in the drain pan. If it still won’t start, call us.
Common causes are the thermostat fan set to ON (which blows cold between cycles), a dirty flame sensor, a weak igniter, low or no gas, an open pressure or limit switch, or a lockout — check the error code. The most common cause is a failed run capacitor; it can also be a bad fan motor, a burned contactor, or a control-board fault. Don’t keep running the AC with the fan stopped — the compressor can overheat. Shut it off and call us; a capacitor is usually a quick, affordable fix.
Ice comes from low airflow (a dirty filter or coil), low refrigerant from a leak, a weak blower, or running the AC in cold weather. Turn the AC OFF and set the fan to ON to melt the ice, then replace the filter. Ice means an airflow or refrigerant problem — call us before running it again.
Usually a clogged condensate drain line, a cracked drain pan, a thawing frozen coil, a failed condensate pump, or high-efficiency furnace condensate that can’t drain. Turn the system off, clear or vacuum the drain line if you can, and keep water away from electrical parts. If it keeps leaking, call us.
Common causes are an oversized system, a dirty filter, an overheating limit trip, a poorly located thermostat, low refrigerant, or a dirty flame sensor. Replace the filter first. Frequent cycling wears out the compressor — if a fresh filter doesn’t fix it, call us.
Buzzing is often electrical (a capacitor or contactor), banging can be a delayed gas ignition, squealing points to a motor or bearing, and a burning smell can be dust or an electrical fault. A brief dusty smell on the first heat of the season is normal. An electrical or burning smell means shut it off and call us. If you smell rotten eggs (gas), leave the house and call your gas company or 911 first.
