The most common Navien problems, what causes them, and how to fix them — from your local NJ Navien pros.
Navien is a leader in high-efficiency condensing tankless water heaters and combi-boilers. When something is off, the unit shows an E-code on the front panel.
On Navien units we most often see E003 (ignition) and E016 (overheating from scale), both common with New Jersey’s hard water. Below are the issues we see most on Navien systems, what usually causes them, and what you can safely check before calling a pro.
Common causes are the gas supply being off, an error/lockout code, closed isolation valves, a clogged cold-water inlet filter, or an ignition failure. Confirm the gas is on, check the display for an error code, make sure the water valves are open, and clean the inlet filter. If it won’t ignite, call us at 609-665-3022.
Usually an ignition failure, flame loss, blocked venting, overheating, or low water flow. Read the code, try one reset, and call us if it comes back — combustion faults should be handled by a licensed tech.
Common causes are loose fittings, a failed pressure-relief valve, condensate on high-efficiency units, corrosion, or a cracked heat exchanger. Turn off the unit and the water supply and call us — a leak near gas or electrical shouldn’t wait.
Common causes are demand exceeding the unit’s size, scale buildup in the heat exchanger from hard water, a dirty inlet filter, crossed hot/cold plumbing, or low gas pressure. Clean the inlet filter. With NJ’s hard water the unit likely needs a descale/flush — we do that. Call us.
On boilers it’s often trapped air, low water pressure, or scale “kettling” in the heat exchanger; on tankless units it’s usually mineral buildup or venting. Check the boiler’s pressure gauge; kettling and trapped air need a professional bleed or flush. Call us.
Tankless units and boilers should be serviced once a year — a descale/flush (important with NJ hard water) plus a combustion and safety check. Annual service keeps it efficient, reliable, and under warranty. Ask us about a maintenance plan — call 609-665-3022.
Homeowners often ask us things like “how much is a flush or part replacement on a Navien unit?” The honest answer is: it depends. We never quote blind — but here’s what drives the cost:
