These simple tasks are safe for any homeowner — no tools or gas knowledge required:

• Check the air filter monthly and replace it when it’s dirty (see our air filter guide).
• Keep supply and return vents open and clear of furniture and rugs.
• Keep the area around the furnace clear — no boxes, laundry, or chemicals nearby.
• For high-efficiency furnaces, make sure the outside intake and exhaust pipes are clear of snow, leaves, and nests.
• Test your thermostat and replace its batteries each fall.
• Make sure you have working carbon-monoxide detectors on every level.

What a professional tune-up includes

The rest of a furnace tune-up involves gas, combustion, and electrical work that should be left to a licensed technician. During an annual visit we:

• Inspect the heat exchanger for cracks (a carbon-monoxide hazard).
• Clean the burners and flame sensor and check the igniter.
• Test gas pressure and combustion, and check the venting.
• Verify all safety switches (limit, rollout, pressure) work.
• Check the blower motor, amp draw, and electrical connections.
• Calibrate the thermostat and confirm a clean, safe start-up.

When to schedule it

Book your furnace tune-up in early fall, before the first cold snap — once a year is ideal. If your furnace hasn’t been serviced in over a year, or you notice short-cycling, weak heat, odd smells, or rising bills, don’t wait for the season.
